The Ins and Outs of a Third Sheet
Why are Third sheets special? What makes them so comfortable? What does thread count mean anyway? Here's all the detail you could ever wish for on our sheets. A good, old-fashioned bedtime read...
What is thread count?
The question on everyone's lips. We hate using industry jargon, but thread count is an important indicator of sheet quality - so let's delve deeper.
Put simply, thread count is a measure of the coarseness or fineness of fabric. It's measured by counting the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric. So to figure out the thread count of your sheets, you count the threads running lengthways and the threads running widthways, then add them together.
But there's more...
Thread count isn't the only measure of quality when it comes to sheets - we also need to look at the quality of the cotton used to create them.
At Third, our sheets are made solely of single-ply yarn. This is the highest grade of cotton you can find - it produces the finest, strongest threads and creates sheets that are impossibly soft.
Some brands exaggerate their thread count by using multi-ply yarns to create their sheets. These are weaker fibres that have been twisted together and combined. Naturally, sheets made from multi-ply yarns are lower quality than those made from single-ply - but it does mean that brands can hike their thread count and make it appear higher.
When it comes to thread count, bigger isn't always better.
Here's the important part: Third sheets have a true 500-thread count. We tested dozens of different thread counts, ranging from 180 up to 1,000, and we discovered that 500-thread count sheets using the highest-grade single-ply yarn hit upon that bedding 'sweet spot', offering both comfort and durability.
Our cotton is hand-picked, long-staple, combed cotton. The combination of these three techniques provide the softest, strongest cotton possible - even after multiple washing machine cycles. In fact, our sheets get even softer the more they're used, loved and washed.
Third sheets are crafted with a sateen weave. If you want to get into specifics, sateen is a four-by-one yarn weave fabric, which exposes more of the cotton on the surface of your sheets. This makes for a smoother, softer finish that you'll be excited to get into bed with.
Sateen sheets are wrinkle-resistant, great for those with sensitive skin, and wonderfully warm.
